Why Are All My Blog Comments Suddenly Russian Spam?

Lately, my WordPress comment section has turned into a spam graveyard. Every single comment seems to be from some random account posting links in Russian. It doesn’t matter what the topic of my post is—Apple, tech, or even something personal—the comments are just a flood of spam in Cyrillic with sketchy-looking URLs. Why is this happening?
Spam is nothing new, but what’s frustrating is how relentless and specific this trend has become. Why is it mostly in Russian? Is there some bot network targeting WordPress sites? Are spammers exploiting some vulnerability that makes English-language blogs an easy target for Russian-language junk? Whatever the reason, it’s making it nearly impossible to have a genuine discussion in the comments section.
What makes this even worse is that WordPress’ built-in spam protection doesn’t seem to be doing enough. Sure, plugins like Akismet or other anti-spam tools exist, but should bloggers really have to add extra layers of defense just to stop obvious nonsense? Shouldn’t WordPress itself be better at filtering these out before they even show up for moderation?
I’d love to hear from other bloggers—are you experiencing the same thing? Is your comment section filled with Russian spam, or is it just me? And more importantly, why isn’t there an easier way to block this without resorting to disabling comments altogether?
Until WordPress finds a better way to handle this, it feels like the only solution is to keep deleting, blocking, and moderating. But really, why should that be necessary? If you’ve got insights, I’d love to hear them—hopefully in English, and hopefully not with a shady link.
